Plantar Fasciitis: Three Common Myths

Like many other conditions, plantar fasciitis has some myths surrounding it. And with social media spreading these myths, you may find it difficult to get the facts. What is plantar fasciitis? 

Plantar fasciitis is a condition that commonly causes heel pain. Your heel bone and toes are connected by a long, bowstring band of tissue called the plantar fascia. Excess stress and tension can cause this ligament to tear or become inflamed. This leads to heel pain in one or both feet. 

The pain is typically the worst right after you wake up, when you take your first steps of the day. It might worsen after you exercise or stand for a long period of time. 

Myth vs reality 

There are a number of myths surrounding plantar fasciitis, and dispelling them early on can help you achieve a faster, smoother recovery. 

Myth: Only athletes get plantar fasciitis

This is entirely untrue. Runners and athletes are at higher risk of developing this condition, but they aren't the only ones who experience it. 

In fact, many people who work active jobs or stand for long periods of time experience plantar fasciitis due to the nature of their work. This includes wait staff, cashiers, teachers, and those who work manual labor positions.

Like many other conditions, everyone has the potential to develop plantar fasciitis, but some are more at risk than others. 

Myth: Plantar fasciitis and heel spurs are related (or the same)

This is also untrue. These two conditions are caused by entirely different things and have completely different treatments. Plantar fasciitis is the result of inflammation of a ligament at the bottom of your foot. Heel spurs are the result of calcium deposits in your heel. 

Myth: Minimalist, or barefoot, running can solve plantar fasciitis

This is a harmful myth and promotes a treatment that isn't effective. Everyone runs differently, and barefoot running is just one style. Adopting a specific method will not cure your heel pain, and you should never continue running if you are in serious pain. In some cases, running barefoot has actually worsened or caused plantar fasciitis

Using any easy fix for plantar fasciitis is unhelpful at best and actively harmful at worst. It's best to visit a doctor and build an actual treatment plan.
